More about the course
The entry-level course in the UK and Northern Ireland is now called the Level 1 Instructor. The course is approved and accredited by the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) - The governing body for Snowboard Instruction within Great Britain and the World. It is aimed at students who wish to find employment in a non mountain environment ie dryslope and indoor snow slopes. It is also the first stage of the BASI level 2 instructor course.

The BASI level 1 instructor course is a 5-day course designed to teach competent recreational boarders the elements of technical riding and entry level teaching techniques. The minimum standard expected for the course is confidence at turning on red runs, 16 weeks of on snow experience and probably more. A sound knowledge of boarding itself is also useful.

What would also be useful is to contact your local slope to see the possibility of shadowing lessons to gain an insight into what’s needed for the teaching element of the course.

During the course you're riding and teaching is assesed. The riding is done continually over the 5 days and the teaching element is split into 2 scenario sessions. Upon successfully completing the course, you will be qualified to teach snowboarding on any dry-slope and any indoor snow facility in Great Britain. Candidates will now also have a more transparent path to progress onto the BASI Mountain Level 2 Instructor Course. A time scale for attending this next level will be given to all candidates at the end of the course.

In order to receive the award candidates who successfully complete the course MUST ALSO :

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Be a member of BASI
  • Hold a first Aid qualification that meets the requirements of BASI (This is not needed prior to attending the Instructor course – can be obtained after)
  • Must attend the compulsory Child Protection Module (3 hour attendance workshop)
  • Complete 35 hours worth of shadowing at an approved BASI snow school

There are few options and types of course offered. Please note however that the courses will only be available during the summer months (May to November) as the centers we use are very busy during winter months.

The first type of course will take place over a series of weekends (totaling 5 days). The NEW styles of course we offer runs from a Friday to a Tuesday or a Wednesday to Saturday (still totaling 5 days) This is to accommodate people who have work or other commitments.

The most popular course style will be run on five consecutive days Monday to Friday. All courses have a maximum of 10 places per tutor available.

Both courses will run from 9.30am until 5.00pm on snow with a lunch break at 1pm. A short debrief/lecture in the evening will also take place so the day should wrap up around 6pm.
